"36 Dramatic Situations"

Whilst writing up my blog posts about the Three-Act structure i wanted to gain a better understanding of what a 'Dramatic Premise' and a 'Dramatic Situation' were. Whilst searching for more information on dramatic situations i stumbled across an article on wikipedia about "The Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations" which is, quote; "a descriptive list ... created by Georges Polti to categorize every dramatic situation that might occur in a story or performance."

The list breaks down narratives into 36 categories, each of which consists of the Situation, the elements that make up that situation, and a short description of how these elements come together to create the situation.

For example, take this breakdown of a 'Disaster' situation:
  1. Disaster (Situation)
    • a Vanquished Power; a Victorious Enemy or a Messenger (elements)
    • The Power falls from their place after being defeated by the Victorious Enemy or being informed of such a defeat by the Messenger. (description)
